Article source: OPPENHEIM ARCHITECTURE The 14-story, 545,000 SF Star Metals Office building provides over 225,000 SF of Class A office space and 23,000 SF of retail area. Tenants will share common building areas and outdoor terraces and have access to bike storage and shower facilities. A rooftop restaurant with an outdoor terrace will crown the structure, providing incredible views of the Atlanta skyline. The design concept for the Star Metals Office building is inspired by the historical context of its site. The building’s form and materials are heavily influenced by the area’s existing industrial, agricultural, and warehouse structures, which were constructed with materials chosen for low cost, easy maintenance, and longevity. These materials were typically assembled in consistent structural bays with repetitive rhythms of solid infill and large fenestrations.
The Star Metals Office building is similarly comprised of simple, honest materials (concrete, metal, and glass) arranged in a variety of repetitive patterns. To address the project’s large program and substantial mass, the elevations of the individual floors are articulated uniquely, utilizing a singular palette of materials, and shifted in plan to create movement and shadow necessary to reduce the perceived scale of the overall volume. From the exterior perspective, this “stratified” approach also abstractly reflects the individual program elements of the building (retail, parking, office, restaurant) and expresses the individual tenants within the office levels. The result is a building that is grounded in the history of the neighborhood, yet offers a fresh narrative through its unique expression, and will become a new reference for the area’s continued evolution.
