Article source: Studio Samuelov The design of the largest startup center in central Europe, House of Startups in Luxembourg (HoST), tells the story of the city and the people who live there, and offers young technology companies a perfect work environment. The project, which occupies more than 6,000 meters spread out over 5 stories, is right in the heart of Luxembourg City and offers office spaces, meeting rooms, various types of open-plan workspaces, a conference center, and plenty of communal spaces. In the building, which is nearing the final stages of occupancy, more than 200 startup companies will ultimately be operating, creating a complete eco-system.
The Israeli design firm Studio Samuelov, which specializes in user experience and interior design, was selected by the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce from among numerous international designers It was chosen for its unique design approach—a perspective which places the user at the center and succeeds in expressing the many stories that make up a brand or a company through spatial design. The entire space was planned from the ground up to maximize interactions among users, a critical element for young startup companies which must see and be seen, exchanging ideas and being exposed to potential collaborators and investors. So, for instance, each floor features a planned central kitchen, rather than setting the kitchen off in a hidden corner, in order to draw people and create a natural meeting spot for spontaneous interactions. Open work spaces, or Hot Desks, aren’t focused in a single area, but are instead spread out among the various offices in order to create interaction between more established companies and those which are in the earlier stages and situated at open workstations. Sightlines are open, with plenty of natural light streaming in from outside, along with a wide variety of seating and workspace options—sofas, bars, meeting rooms, and private rooms for phone calls—meeting the needs of varying and dynamic work styles of tech companies, andgiving the space itself a powerful advantage. The design language of the building changes from floor to floor, so that on each one different stories express the DNA of the center. On the mezzanine level, the emphasis is on Luxembourg City, with all the cultural and social variety it has to offer, integrating old and new, alongside high-tech elements and classic details. The first floor is designed around the message of creativity and self-expression, and even the pillars at its center have become coloring “pages,” full of artistic creations, whiteboards, seating nooks in different styles, and dynamic table systems which allow movement and change. Further up in the building, on the two floors occupied by fintech startups, the design tells the story of an “out-of-control bank,” playing on the industry’s conservative roots but celebrating the change the field is currently undergoing and encouraging out-of-the-box thinking. Studio Samuelov operates projects all over Israel and around the world under the banner of “Designing Great User Experiences,” and specializing in interior design of commercial and work spaces.
