Rotterdam is a breeding ground for the application of new strategies that can make a meaningful difference.

The Rijnhaven area in Rotterdam is exceptionally suitable to introduce an urbanism that addresses climate change, climate adaptation and the ever-increasing need for more housing in the region.

With this strategic proposal Blueroom and Urban Crossovers propose to stack innovations on top of each other to create an urban area that is CO2 neutral, energy neutral, waste free, increases biodiversity on land and in water, and most of all, builds a strong community in doing so.

The Posthumalaan and Rijnhaven form a pivoting point between a series of fundamentally different urban conditions: Afrikaanderbuurt, Katendrecht, Kop van Zuid and Wilhelmina Peninsula. This requires an urban strategy that can connect these physical and mental differences in an ambitious and seemingly effortless manner.

A development that is attractive and accessible for all. But also, a development that adds a unique urban condition to the entire metropolitan area. A district that further enforces the innovative and sustainable ambitions of Rotterdam. Thus, setting an example for climate adaptive urbanism for urban deltas around the world.

The project includes horeca, offices, makerspaces and will be home to a number of international institutions that promote the fight against climate change and the need to adapt our cities to the inevitable effects of climate change.

Rijnhaven Rotterdam provides a multitude of residential units in all market segments located in a range of building typologies from floating creative communities to houses with gardens to apartments and penthouses in supertall high-rises.

The high-density area will be interlaced with green public spaces and green functions such as urban vegetable and fruit farming, a floating park, and a park promenade linking to the existing pedestrian routes. The floating program will reinforce the biodiversity both above and under water.

By constructing all buildings entirely from prefabricated elements and units, the development can be realized relatively fast while keeping construction time on site to a minimum. The assembly of elsewhere produced elements can largely take place from the water. This way construction nuisance for the residents around are kept to a minimum and the existing roads are fully at the disposal of the users.
