By applying Alberti’s Renaissance maxim to an industrial building that the house is a small city and a city a large house, an attempt has been made to create a working space in which the perception is that of a strongly anthropocentric system. The FMTS Group project starts precisely on the basis of the pre-existence of a prefabricated box among the many in the industrial suburbs of Campania, originally built as an industrial factory and apparently defined and binding. In the service sector, Eisenman’s design concepts “structure, function and technique” can be compared with those of “product, process and production system” dear to the world of industry. In this project, the product, if product can be talked about, is varied between personnel trained in skills required by the market, in training packages, with a process of practical training on the one hand, in an innovative and advanced high gastronomy school and on the other corporate training with a spin-off process, management training and “production system”. The diversity and complexity of human-oriented spaces, tools and technologies must guarantee the conditions of wellbeing in which the attitudes and enthusiasm of the groups are refined.

In this context, an elegant multi-functional project was created for an important communicative action, in which the exterior design was centered on the interior design to increase the perception of the operators. It is for this reason that the description of the project must start from the centrality of the
internal functions and forms to arrive at the external solutions that arose precisely as a consequence of the former.

The building consists of three floors, the ground floor 1000 sq m and was designed to host a cooking school. It is divided into 5 large areas in addition to the accessory areas. The pizza school area is facing the garden and has the best external perspective. Three types of ovens allow different executions in a large space with a separate tasting area also exposed on the garden. From the tasting area you can look at the large kitchen where at least 25 people can work. And it is on this area that overlooks the elegant 80-seat auditorium, made of light wood and equipped with every multimedia support. Around 100 m² where an artificial vegetable garden will be created, there is the area for the professionalizing cooking school equipped with all the latest Electrolux technology, ovens, induction hobs, circular hoods, rather than the prestigious Moltenì monoblock. The room centered on natural products induces the 20 learners at their individual stations to focus on the naturalness and originality of the preparations.

The area for the pastry school is instead conceived with the spirit of guiding students to a training concept similar to that of the pharmacy. If the gastronomic preparations are also fantasy and improvisation, pastry is precision and rigor. Here the environment is more rigorous, soundproofed, concentrated.

The second floor is designed for corporate training activities and spin-offs. The rigor and monolithicity of the styles are the same as for the other two floors.

The third floor is centered on employees and is therefore the brightest, despite being in a shed, and makes the best use of glazed solutions. The rooms are large and acoustically soundproofed and well lit.

Over 150 m² dedicated nursery for children, a recreation area and 100 m² for Tecnogym equipped fitness area; they are an originality in the south and demonstrate the sensitivity of an enlightened leadership.

But the thing that everyone notices is the splendid area with the curved curtain made of infinite colored chains that separates without dividing the meeting space with the large all-glass facade overlooking the grass garden.

The exteriors can only recall the origins and the context, transmit the archetypes to those who enter the workplace and to those who look at the outside from the workstation. Hence a non-trivial color reminiscent of the warm hues of the south (of the bricks of the Eboli tobacconist and of the land of Battipaglia), and the wood that gives a sinuous shape to the original box.

Originally, the company had to be a carpentry shop and the use of wood outside and inside decoration makes it perceptible.
