Suburbian Villa in Pavia, Italy by deamicisarchitetti

Tuesday, August 7th, 2018

Article source: deamicisarchitetti

In the vagueness of suburbia, where each place is similar to any other, where architecture is always changing and still always the same, where the limits, the entrances and the margins are usually those prescribed by regulations and allotment plans, and where regulations impose to build in the centre of the available allotment, this house aims to find its roots in the context, starting from its position, in order to break with settlement neutrality.

Mindet 6 in Denmark by C.F. Møller Architects

Monday, August 6th, 2018

Article source: C.F. Møller Architects

At Mindet 6, close to the Port of Aarhus, a bright, sculptural tower and landmark will combine city life and cultural history with attractive new cultural and business facilities, together with public restaurants.

The starting point for the tower is an existing historical industrial complex, with its legacy of the port’s industry and culture in former times. The impressive building structure will be preserved and supplemented with a new tower. The tower will be integrated into the existing complex, from which its basic geometry will be derived. The historical qualities of the existing building will continue to be apparent, and will also gain new life from being opened up towards the surroundings, to create attractive outdoor and indoor relations. On the roof of the old building, a new, publicly-accessible green rooftop garden environment will be established, and will include a restaurant, orangery and kitchen gardens.

Portland Japanese Garden Cultural Village in Oregon by KENGO KUMA AND ASSOCIATES

Sunday, August 5th, 2018

Article source: KENGO KUMA AND ASSOCIATES

Portland Japanese Garden’s new Cultural Village is a modest, human-scaled set of buildings arranged around a courtyard plaza, whose fourth side is the existing, untouched gardens from the 1960s. The project is a village positioned along a journey from the city to the top of the hill, a form of modern monzenmachi wherein the pilgrimage pays homage to the spirit of nature.

Evening exterior view: strong relationships reinforce the configuration, with the spaces between acting as the connective invisible protagonist in the arrangement; this view looks across the Village Courtyard from beneath the Tea Café eaves, to the Cultural Center at right, the Garden House at left, and the Castle Wall ahead, Image Courtesy © Jeremy Bittermann

The property in Singapore’s Luxury Island Resort of Sentosa Cove is built on a long narrow plot with views to the rear of the Sentosa Golf Course.  The design inspiration for the house was a traditional Japanese courtyard house, with rooms spilling onto terraces that surround a central courtyard garden.  Combined with a holistic approach to sustainability and climactic needs, this contemporary beach house is a refreshing escape for the family that owns it.

Bellevue Botanical Garden Visitor and Education Center in Washington by OLSON KUNDIG

Monday, July 2nd, 2018

Article source: OLSON KUNDIG

Since opening in 1992, the 53-acre Bellevue Botanical Garden has become one of the most popular public gardens in the Pacific Northwest. A growing interest in native plantings and gardening, as well as expanded programs, has drawn large crowds to the botanical gardens in recent years. The design of the new visitor center answers these needs while blurring the boundaries between architecture and the gardens. Balancing civic function with residential scale and attention to detail, the design creates intimate, inspirational spaces that allow for exploration and quiet reflection.
