Woldyia Maternity Center in Ethiopia by Vilalta Arquitectura

Friday, September 8th, 2017

Article source: Vilalta Arquitectura

The project is located at the entrance of the hospital compound of the city of Woldya, in the north east of Ethiopia.

A key decision of the project was to divide it in two areas that share the same entrance space: the functional maternity unit and the mothers’ waiting area, a new program born as a result of the sociological analysis of the site. This is a space where future mothers coming from rural areas can live in an environment where they can feel comfortable two weeks before they give birth.

Healing Gardens for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California by AHBE Landscape Architects

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017

Article source: v2com

AHBE Landscape Architects, an esteemed Los Angeles-based firm known for its expertise in designing thoughtful, evocative landscapes that allow for contemplation and reflection, has created a healing environment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for patients, hospital staff, and visiting families and friends.

Unique solution transforms a concrete plaza into a restorative space in the city

The existing site consisted of a concrete plaza atop a multi-level garage. Using the metaphor of human skin, AHBE developed a multi-layered landscape solution that protects the existing building’s structural and mechanical integrity and accounts for an existing drainage system, emergency access, lighting and way finding, as well as extreme weather conditions. The solution – a unique, green roof-inspired system built onto the plaza’s existing structure – maximizes the impact of the landscape while minimizing construction and alterations to the existing building.

Plastic surgery practice in Rhodes, Greece by dARCHstudio

Friday, June 30th, 2017

Article source: dARCHstudio

Since September 2015, the plastic surgery practice is located on the first floor of a class listed building, dating back to 1912, in the centre of Rhodes. Aiming to preserve and emphasize the new from within the old, the interior space was renovated with subtlety to be transformed into a contemporary, functional medical practice with all the necessary equipment but without losing its charm Italian-architecture characteristics. The practice is bisected by a wide airy corridor that houses the reception and lounge area, and ends in a sunny balcony at one end. From it branch the entrance, two offices, an operating room, a kitchen and a bathroom. The white color of the walls radiates a sense of cleanliness and sterility while simultaneously it stands in contrast to the colorful variety and the geometric patterns of the old floor tiles. A smooth and uniform cement mortar layer fills the voids of the floor, where the tiles are missing. All the furniture and the lighting, except for the office desks and chairs, is custom-made by the studio. The design of the furniture is inspired by the human anatomy, as well as by the important (for both architecture and plastic surgery) meaning of “section-incision”.

Centre Médical Et Esthétique (Cosem) Auber in Paris, France by Sky Factory, Inc.

Friday, June 16th, 2017

Article source: Sky Factory, Inc.

COSEM Auber hosts multiple practices in this 1,600 sq. m. (17,222 sq. ft.) facility, including a radiology imaging center located in the basement. The general reception lounge on the first floor is also located deep inside the building. While the interiors’ contemporary style underscored the clean geometry of the space, an effective solution was needed to neutralize the confined nature of the areas and transform them into sustainable spaces for human occupancy.

Restless Response: Emergency Medical Station 50 at Queens Hospital in New York City by Dean/Wolf Architects

Sunday, March 19th, 2017

Article source: v2com

The Queens Hospital EMS station was commissioned by the design excellence initiative process implemented by the New York City Department of Design and Construction, for the Fire Department of New York City.

Kathryn Dean, Principal for Dean/Wolf Architects explains the design by staying “I am interested in the capacity for architecture to convey identity and meaning through emotional resonance. I believe this happens through the impact of materials and form coming together in a particular place… In order to understand the building, it is important to understand two departure points: First, the building was commissioned shortly after 9/11. Second, when I work, I often build intuitive paper models to investigate ideas. When I received the commission, I started making these models. After several more rational schemes, the double horizontal bars emerged. It took me a bit of thought to realize why this felt right. They were my own deep emotional response to the fallen towers.”
