Can Bordoy -Grand House & Garden in Palma, Spain by OHLAB

Thursday, January 23rd, 2020

Article source: OHLAB

Can Bordoy -Grand House & Garden- is a small 24 room hotel with a magnificent garden, swimming pool, spa and panoramic terrace, located in La Lonja neighborhood, the heart of the historic center of Palma de Mallorca. It is a complete renovation of a 2,500 m2 abandoned building that had been heavily modified throughout its more than 500 years of history. Can Bordoy has been envisioned and developed by businessman Mikael Hall and his family. The architecture and interior design have been carried out by OHLAB, an office directed by the architects Paloma Hernaiz and Jaime Oliver.

One of the most distinctive elements of the property is its garden, not only because of its size in such a dense area of the city, nor for being La Lonja’s largest private garden, but because of the richness and antiquity of the existing vegetation – which includes spectacular hackberries, jacarandas and citrus trees among others- as well as for the sound of the birds that inhabit it. The garden, along with the inner courtyard of the house and the roof terrace with panoramic views over the city, adds up to a total of almost 1,000 m2 of outdoor space. One of the project’s most important interventions has been opening the doors of the garden, until now unknown by the vast majority, to the city and giving it visibility from the entrance courtyard and from the street. Thanks to the new use of the building you can now visit most of the garden through the open terrace of the restaurant.

Canine & Feline Hotel in Vila do Conde, Portugal by Raulino Silva Arquitecto

Tuesday, January 21st, 2020

Article source: Raulino Silva

The Canine & Feline Hotel is located in Parada, Vila do Conde and the main program consists of temporary dog and cat accommodation, a hotel where the animals stay for a few days, during holidays or professional travel of their owners. The remaining program is a complement to the space’s activity, with a veterinary office, a grooming room, outdoor training areas and a swimming pool for pets.

The program is distributed over three buildings that are interconnected, allowing to create three different areas. This way we got to separate the cat zone from the dog zone, avoiding the meeting of both and reducing the animal noises. In another building we find all the public service spaces.

Sunken Garden in East Hampton, New York by Blaze Makoid Architecture

Monday, December 16th, 2019

Article source: Blaze Makoid Architecture

Sunken Garden is a one-acre site in East Hampton. It was originally part of a much larger estate built around 1903 and subsequently torn down. The project focuses on the reuse of the abandoned foundation, which is situated between the new house and the pool area, and redesign of the pathways, arbor and pool. The goal was to create a series of outdoor spaces, ranging from contemplative to large scale entertaining. Inspired by the modernist, crafted interventions of Carlo Scarpa, the design inserts new details that compliment and honor the existing structure. Concrete stairs, board formed concrete walls, cedar structures and steel details make up a strong, readable material palette. A rundown brick walkway was taken apart and rebuilt with the salvaged bricks and a more contemporary robust arbor was installed with a patinated steel sculpture by Simi Dabah as a focal point at the pool lounge area.

Bull Path in New York by Blaze Makoid Architecture

Friday, November 29th, 2019

Article source: Blaze Makoid Architecture

Designed by Blaze Makoid Architecture, this 6,200 square foot house in East Hampton is situated on a long, two acre site that is steeply sloped along the eastern property line. The property is heavily wooded with mature pine trees.

Large walls of floating stone panels are incorporated at the approach to the house creating a level of monumentality as well as providing privacy to the street and guest parking. Behind these two panels, resides a pair of two-story volumes oriented in an offset ‘T’ configuration. A two-story glass entry link frames the distant views across the length of the property via a 12 foot by 75 foot reflecting / swimming pool. This configuration is meant to cradle the built outdoor spaces, as well as a play lawn while maximizing daylight and southern exposure in what is otherwise a densely shaded site. The east/west volume contains an open plan living room embraced by glass, a dining room with dramatic glass “wall of wine” and kitchen at the ground level with a master suite on the second floor.

Kûara Hotel in Brazil by David Guerra Arquitetura e Interiores

Friday, November 22nd, 2019

Article source: David Guerra Arquitetura e Interiores

Kûara, meaning sun for the indigenous Tupi-Guarani. The house of Tupã, the supreme god. Kûara Delivers, every day, energy, heat, life, all elements that make Bahia, the province on which the portuguese discoverers, led by Cabral, disembarked in Brazil, a national treasure, that define Brazilian identity itself. The Brazilian, indigenous at first, but not only, mixed through dozens of generations, in an ethnic pluralism, bringing an unique diversity to our people, strength in a fascinating narrative about the roots of this country, becoming memory from the Brazilian identity, reminding us of what’s more precious: our rich nature, as generous mother, provide us the primary foundations of survival, in a fascinating invitation to a healthy relation with the environment, settled in respect and harmony with nature.

This lush nature is inserted on site, since way before the idea of an occupation. An organic composition, which main axis is the Mucugê river. The rain forest flourishes in conjunction with the “mangue” (a kind of swamp endemic for this region, which hosts a unique biome), between the famous cliffs of Arraial D’Ajuda. The 200 meters of beach take us to the unforgettable horizon offered by the Atlantic Ocean, on which, about 500 years ago, the portuguese “caravelas” came from the west, beginning a new phase on Brazilian history. This richness of memory and diversity could not be ignored, opting, thereby, for the preservation of all native vegetation, using the structure of the old hotel to build the new one on the same places as the old buildings. The landscape architecture takes that into account. Felipe Fontes puts down a composition in frank dialogue with all local flora, aligning his interpretation with the native.
