The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, New York by Becker + Becker

May 4th, 2023 by Sanjay Gangal

Article source: Becker + Becker

This project consists of an extensive renovation and addition to the internationally renowned environmental institute’s headquarters.  The project re-envisions and updates the forward-thinking aspirations of the visionary 1978 design by Malcolm Wells, a founder of the green building movement.  Over the 42 years since this innovative project was lauded widely in the architectural and general press as a trailblazing exemplar of sustainable design, its solar thermal roof and geothermal systems failed and were lost to renovations that subverted the original intention for the building to embody the Cary’s environmental values.

Family House Hlubocepy in Czech Republic by RO_AR Szymon Rozwalka architects

May 4th, 2023 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: RO_AR Szymon Rozwalka architects

The proposed building is located on the border of two different worlds: the urban and the natural. From the north-western side of the site is a wedge of bio-corridor stretching along the Dalejský Brook. The corridor is enhanced by the distinctive exposure of the Hlubočepské Rocks.

Urban space surrounds the site on the south and east sides. It is a chaotic and random development, often adversely affecting the value of the projected terrain. The form and spatial layout of the house are a direct response to this context.

1123 Walnut Street in Boulder, Colorado by MQ Architecture

Article source: MQ Architecture

This commission encompassed two separate commissions. The first one was to develop a two story mixed used building on a 48 feet wide by 150 feet deep “party” lot. The second challenge consisted on the design of a new typology of hospitality: a cannabis lounge for the recreational consumption of Marihuana.

The project is facing Boulder’s Downtown Historic District, a Landmark area built around 1880 where most of the lots are 25 feet wide with brick party walls. After World War II plenty of these buildings were modernized with metal and precast facade panels.

Museum Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn, Netherlands by KAAN Architecten

May 3rd, 2023 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: KAAN Architecten

After winning the commission through a public competition in 2016, KAAN Architecten undertook the renovation and extension of Museum Paleis Het Loo, taking cues from the layout and proportions of the baroque palace and its historic surroundings. The ambitious project involved the addition of over 5000 square metres of new facilities and spaces, a careful restoration of the palace, and a meticulous asbestos removal process. The newly transformed Paleis Het Loo now radiates the grandeur that befits one of the Netherlands’ most renowned and frequented museums.

View across the Bassecour towards the west wing and the entry pavilion. The Bassecour has evolved beyond just the palace forecourt, now serving as the roof of the new extension. House on Nishinokyo-hills in Nara, Japan by Waro Kishi + K.ASSOCIATES/Architects Co., Ltd

Article source: Waro Kishi + K.ASSOCIATES/Architects Co., Ltd

This is a house for a small family of husband+wife+child, located in the outskirts of Nara.

A parking space facing the road in front, extends the full width of the front opening, so as to accommodate all the cars for daily use and the motor bikes for the owner’s hobby. This is why the façade is set back to give space to the parking area. The building itself projects a closed image, except for the hobby area on the first floor, which is a widely open space with glass openings facing the collection of moterbikes.

With a gentle touch, the newest addition to campus preserves the past and prepares the future.

The oldest brick structure in the area, the Federal House at Penn State Behrend is gracefully preserved and repurposed by an expansive addition. A light and spacious modern barn slips into the steeply graded site linking to the restored Federal House by way of an elegant, glass bridge to preserve and elevate the historically significant building.

Theater Koblenz in Germany by MVRDV

May 1st, 2023 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: MVRDV

MVRDV has presented its design for the extensive renovation of the Theater Koblenz, comprising an interior renovation and redesign of significant parts of the theatre’s backstage elements. Working within the boundaries of the existing building, the project carefully balances the many complexities of the brief: heritage preservation is considered alongside necessary technical upgrades and a roof renovation. In addition, the façade of the operations building on Clemensstraße will be redesigned to give this backstage entrance a modern, expressive appearance that announces it as an integral part of the theatre complex while clearly distinguishing it from the theatre’s historic visitor entrance. With the renovation preserving a large part of the building for further use, and using bio-based materials as much as possible, the carbon emissions for the Theater Koblenz will be lower than for a comparable renovation.

Casa de les Porxades in Albal, Spain by ENDALT Arquitectes

May 1st, 2023 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: ENDALT Arquitectes

The destruction of l’Horta of València, one of the main cultural and environmental values of the metropolitan area of the city, has been a constant in our territory. Within the framework of a recently created urbanization that is destroying part of this heritage, Casa de les Porxades is born with the intention of recovering and giving meaning to the architecture of the past in the territory on which it is built, while taking advantage of the lessons of sustainability and landscape integration of vernacular architecture from a contemporary vision and language.

Formally, the house follows the path of the alquerías, rural houses linked to an agricultural exploitation, that we find a few meters from this urbanization surrounded by orchards; buildings composed of a main two-sided volume to which other volumes with diverse geometries are attached: with sloping roofs, flat roofs, porches, etc. This also gives off an air of organic growth characteristic of traditional architecture.
