It is a small apartment, part of the Manor of Quinta da Arriaga, in Oeiras. The original house and its spaces of support, in the western limit of the Municipal Garden of Oeiras, were divided in smaller fractions.
Facing the street level, with a private access, confronts on the back the garden and a small water course. The apartment is divided into minimum spaces, crossed by a central corridor.
The Vasco da Gama Aquarium is an old navy facility that opened to the public in 1898 for scientific investigation and educational purposes. It continues to have an important role in the knowledge of the sea and the sea-species. To celebrate the importance that the Portuguese King Carlos had on the origins of the aquarium and in the investigation of the ocean, the entrance hall was restored to receive this exhibition.
The Luís de Freitas Branco School is located in a suburban area, over a territory once occupied by agricultural fields and industrial facilities, overlap now by residential buildings,highways and shopping malls.
In the outskirts of the architecture ensemble of Nova Oeiras, one emblematic urbanistic project of the XX century, is a set of buildings with some of the same influences. We where invited to develop the project for one of these apartments.
The house is located in a residential neighborhood in Nova Oeiras in the Oeiras district, a neighborhood with a modernist urbanism, which is a great example of the concept called “garden city”. This neighborhood has an area of houses built in spacious plots, each with a leafy garden.
Located in one of the highest points in Oeiras, Portugal, with a view over the Tejo river and the Atlantic ocean, this house is based on a trapezoidal terrain which formed the concept for the creation of this project.
The ML House is located in Oeiras, an area – considered by many – as one of the best in Europe as far as Life Quality is concerned. Included in a single family villa neighborhood, the project was focused on a new construction in the available plot according to the proposed program while maximizing the available land.
The main goal of the project was to create a building integrated in the urban context and providing the construction of public space visually connecting the city and the park.
The site plan is located in a park area in the middle of a neighborhood with public buildings, like a Day Care Elderly Centre and a Public Swimming Pool. The building offers public space and paths connecting the different parts of the city and opening it to the community.
The project is located between in an urban area with a residential neighbourhood mainly with social housing for low income families uphill and an area with various public buildings at the lower part of the valley. The elderly day centre is in between these rather different social, programmatic and physical realities, thus celebrating both its private and public character.
