Black Swan in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Studioninedots

February 22nd, 2019 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Studioninedots

Studioninedots presents Black Swan, the result of our research into Overamstel’s gradual transition from an industrial area to a characteristic, mixed-use district in Amsterdam.

All over the Netherlands, mono-functional industrial sites are designated as potential densification areas. Their often generous layout allows for specific interventions to generate the aimed urban density. With Black Swan we propose a design as well as a strategy for welcoming, bit by bit, housing and facilities to a permanently active work area.

Black Swan’s medium-rise tower is home to both workspaces and apartments; its base functions to facilitate creative offices, restaurant, bar and culture. At street level, Black Swan interacts with the existing Building B of the adjoining Kauwgomballenfabriek socially and energetically. Here, the pioneering residents and users collectively take care of the spaces within and around Black Swan.

Sedlak’s House in Chlumec nad Cidlinou, Czech Republic by ZETTE ateliér sro

Article source: ZETTE ateliér sro

The parcel is situated on a hill in front of the Charles’s Crown castle which is remarkable inspiration itself. Two outstanding artists of the time was invited by Count František Ferdinand Kinský for the construction of the castle, the Czech architect of Italian origin Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel and the Prague architect František Maximilián Kanka. As a result a colorful baroque jewel with a central composition and an ideal location in the landscape was created. The castle becomes the main motif of the view from the living area and reflects in the final design of the house. In a way, the house is a paraphrase on the opposite chateau, a crown and a blooming blossom nevertheless with a preservation of a farmhouse character.

School by the Lagoon in Ampara, Sri Lanka by CHINTHAKA WICKRAMAGE ASSOCIATES

February 22nd, 2019 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: CHINTHAKA WICKRAMAGE ASSOCIATES

Site is located overlooking the ‘Karachchi Thona’ lagoon in Maligakadu , Karaithivu .

Karaithivu is one of the areas worst hit by the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, in Ampara District of the Eastern Province. Buildable land is scarce in Karaithiv, which is sandwiched between the vast stretches of paddy fields and the densely populated coastal belt and inland settlements. The reservations created by the Lagoon and the Access Road, further challenged the Architect of building a school on a compact narrow linear site, measuring 95ft. by 300ft, a reclaimed land along, the lagoon bank using tsunami debris.

The brief provided an opportunity to design a building that immersed itself into its context, as a building that can contribute to and formed part of the landscape. If the ground plane was a natural scar on the landscape due to the tsunami, could the new building effect a new condition that repaired and rejuvenated it. Could a built solution contribute to the context of an existing location? These questions informed the built solution, the selection of materials, articulation of interior volumes and the resolution of the architectural form itself.

Beijing-based architecture studio, TEMP, has renovated an old house into a café in Incheon, South Korea. The original structure was first built in the 70s using mainly bricks and concrete for a residential purpose. It was then turned into a local noodle store by the early 2000s. During this first transition, the building was painted white and the front yard was flattened into a parking lot. In refitting the structure to function as café, the studio designed through methods that mostly comprised of destruction to reveal the original architecture.

Odeyto Indigenous Centre in Toronto, Canada by GOW HASTINGS ARCHITECTS

The Odeyto Indigenous Centre at Seneca College’s Newnham Campus is a home away from home for the FirstPeoples@Seneca.

Conceptually, the addition and renovation are inspired by the image of a canoe pulling up to a dock, stopping at Seneca College to gather knowledge before continuing on life’s journey. The canoe-like form docks alongside the contrasting rigid lines of the existing precast concrete building. As the only building on campus with an organic curvilinear design, Odeyto breaks away from the colonial grid that dominates on the campus.

Porta House in Mar del Plata, Argentina by Moire Studio Architects

Bearing in mind the limited dimensions of the piece of land, we proposed to elevate the public spaces of the house. This resource provides good lighting and great visuals of the city, as it gives privacy to the terrace, which is the main outer space.

On the ground floor the house develops a basing. It allows creating a strong limit with the street, opening up to a small patio. On the access and the bedrooms area, the limit turns sharper, as it gets to be more permeable on the corner.
