The Gellerup area in the city of Aarhus is to be rethought. One of the ways to create more life and positive development in this troubled neighborhood is to move 950 municipal jobs to the center of the area. Arkitema Architects are winners of a PPP contest, in which the 23,000 m² building integrates workplaces and public functions as well as an entrepreneurial environment. The new building will be an icon that sets the standard for the revitalized Gellerup area.

Our concept is to design a roofed area open to the public, where the administrative office spaces intertwine with public functions. The ground floor is designed with tactile surfaces such as tiles and wood, to ensure the users perception of a both friendly and open house. The building contains varied urban features such as café, restaurant, workshops, coffee roaster etc.

Centrally located in the urban space is a series of stacked and offset boxes that recreates the overall architecture. This tower rises through the floors, and merges the public functions with the horizontal floors to underline the openness between users, both administrative employees and public citizens. In addition, walkways connect the floors to contribute to varying levels and variation in height throughout the building.

Most eye-catching is the top box which, by virtue of its distinctive cantilever serves as a greeting welcome to Aarhus and Gellerup. Visitors from the street will be able to take a high-speed elevator through the building to end up 24m above the terrain and let the new Gellerup and Aarhus Bay unfold for their eyes.
