Article source: Wilmotte & Associés The halle Freyssinet, formerly known as “Messageries d’Austerlitz”, is a shed for goods transhipment which was built in the late 1920s by the French engineer Eugène Freyssinet, as part of a programme for the extension and modernization of facilities of the Compagnie d’Orléans. This remarkable building in prestressed reinforced concrete is located in the urban renewal area of the Paris Rive Gauche ZAC [Mixed Development Area], lying below the Bibliothèque François Mitterrand in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. This innovative technique for applying concrete – prestressing – was used to provide the shed with an exceptionally slender loadbearing structure (less than 5 cm thick at the roof ridge in certain places). As a result, it has been listed since 2012 in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments.
The 310 metres long by 58 metres wide shed covers an area of almost 25,000 sq.m, with a floor-to-ceiling height of 12 to 16 metres. The project for the redevelopment of the Freyssinet shed is part of the renaissance of the entire Paris Rive Gauche district. This project initiated by Xavier Niel has made it possible to preserve, restore and modernise this “rough-cast concrete umbrella” with its innovative structure conceived by Eugène Freyssinet and to make it a novel workplace to accommodate all services required for entrepreneurial and digital creation activities. Behind its apparent simplicity, the rehabilitation of the halle Freyssinet was a real challenge. It was necessary to give new energy to a historic building, break its isolation by including two public passages through it, provide space for 3,000 workstations, and introduce new significant architectural elements. Each of these two architectures takes strength from the other to form a single whole in a new living, contrasting space. After a little more than two years of construction work, the former halle Freyssinet now houses STATION F, a campus of 1,000 startups, making entrepreneurship more accessible and creating greater coherence of a startup ecosystem that was previously fragmented. The new building is made up of 3 distinct zones: the “Share” forum for digital sharing and interaction, the “Create” zone in the center of the shed dedicated to startup work spaces, and the “Chill” zone that hosts a 3,500 sq.m restaurant. Wilmotte & Industries’ designers have designed custom-made furniture for STATION F, encouraging spontaneity, exchange and mobility. Station F is an urban, architectural and human project developed around a central axis that is the size of the Eiffel Tower! Contact Wilmotte & Associés
