Article source: 3DELUXE State-of-the-art logistics technology and a well-thought-out working atmosphere – the latest architectural project from 3deluxe combines both. For the global technology company Harting, the design studio has designed a high-tech logistics centre with adjoining administration building, which is one of the most innovative in Europe. Equipped with an automated small parts high-bay warehouse and high-speed shuttle robots coupled with conveyor technology, the new logistics centre of the medium-sized company Harting was built on an area of 27,000 square metres in Espelkamp, Lower Saxony. The “European Distribution Centre (EDC)” was officially opened at the beginning of July. The entire logistics system is arranged on a simple foundation and everything is handled on the ground level.
Networking in all working areas Designing industrial buildings is a first for the 3deluxe design agency – but the logistics centre is a very special project. Not only is the technology state-of-the-art, the work area for the employees is also characterised by a modern concept of open work spaces: An open, light-flooded landscape of different work areas across several floors offers the employees contemporary working environments which leads to higher efficiency. In order to optimally network the various work areas, 3deluxe located the administration building as an integrated cross beam connecting the warehouse and order picking hall. “The project shows that the investment in good design of industrial buildings pays off – the corporate culture and values become visible for employees and customers through the architecture,” says Peter Seipp, Managing Director of 3deluxe, shortly summarising the corporate architecture project. The large glazed areas in the logistics centre open up the hall interior to the outside in an unusually generous way and allow daylight stream in. In this way, spatial proximity and communicative visual axes were created. The concept attaches the greatest importance to maximum external connection and visibility along with plenty of light in all workplaces, from the executive floor to the picking area. A modern staff bistro is connected to the administration area and even has its own adjoining outdoor space. Trendsetting architecture for satisfied employees “Employee friendliness” has always been the main focus for 3deluxe and is also evident in the loading docks for the trucks. These are not arranged in the usual row and open to order picking, but opposite each other in a freely usable shunting and logistics area. As a separate room, it forms a buffer zone to the picking hall. In order to create the most pleasant working environment possible at each location, the draft to the hall is reduced to a minimum. Another aspect of great importance was a sustainable energy supply; therefore, a photovoltaic system was installed on the roof and supplies the electricity for the logistics centre. Biomethane from the company's own production and a geothermal system cover the energy requirements for cold and heat – this minimises CO2 emissions. Communicative, transparent and modern – these are the characteristics of the architecture of the high-tech logistics centre. The interaction with the high-tech logistics halls has resulted in an innovative building that not only convinces through its design, but also through its employee satisfaction. As a design collective, 3deluxe unites around 40 creative professionals covering the fields of architecture and interior design as well as brand design under one roof. 3deluxe in/exterior, directed by Dieter Brell and Peter Seipp, specializes in spatial design and architecture. Due to its characteristic use of shape with an organic touch, 3deluxe in/exterior has become a style icon in an international context. The projects that received worldwide recognition and numerous awards include the multimedia experience room ‘Scape’ at the Expo 2000, the interactive installations during the Soccer World Cup 2006, the design of the ‘Cocoon Club’ for star DJ Sven Väth, the corporate architectures ‘Leonardo Glass Cube’ or the ‘Butterfly Pavilion’ on Noor Island, Dubai. Recently the design of large cruise ships has been part of the studio's portfolio. 3deluxe currently realizes projects in Germany, Lithuania, USA and Dubai. Contact 3DELUXE
