Luuwit Park in Portland, Oregon by Skylab

November 28th, 2022 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Skylab

Skylab worked alongside 2.ink Studio and in close collaboration with Portland Parks and Recreation to create this 16-acre, hourglass-shaped park in a northeast Portland neighborhood. The design team developed the park, formerly Beech Park, around an integrated strategy that creates both passive native meadow areas that require limited maintenance as well as areas for intensively active program elements. The neighborhood is a mix of long-term residents and an increasingly diverse population of new residents. The park’s program elements were developed in coordination with area residents through a series of public open houses and meetings with the project’s Design Advisory Group.

Sonoma Hilltop New Residence in California by Klopf Architecture

November 28th, 2022 by Sanjay Gangal

Article source: Klopf Architecture

Inspired by another mid-century modern home the client owned, this new residence represents a much larger 21st-century version built into the gently sloping hillside to take advantage of the sprawling hilltop views of the Sonoma valley. The quiet front facade leads guests into a formal entry that divides the house into private and public spaces. Rounding the corner into the great room, one is immediately hit by the breathtaking view that extends outward beyond the infinity pool and deck through a continuous wall of glass. In the opposite direction, each of the three bedrooms was designed with its own seating area and bathroom, creating private suites for family members and guests alike.

Yada Theater in Yixing, China by GOA (Group of Architects)

November 28th, 2022 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: GOA (Group of Architects)

Yada Theater is located in Yangxian Xishan of Yixing, a county-level city of Jiangsu Province in China’s southeastern region rich in cultural and natural resources. Since the Song dynasty, Yixing has been the capital of Chinese pottery production, known for its clayware. In addition, it contains China’s largest bamboo forest, a significant tourist attraction. In the contemporary context of urbanization, Yangxian Xishan is a successful rural revitalization practice of Yixing. It is the first small town development to achieve territorial openness and self-operation, and Yada Theater is the cultural landmark of the town. Adjacent to Yangxian Lake, the site is in a hilly terrain covered by 400 hectares of primitive bamboo forests. Mountains, bamboo groves, and lakes comprise the local landscape system. Within this unique geographical condition, Yada Theater incorporates the existing ecological aesthetics into its design. It develops a new approach to a cultural venue by integrating architectural morphology with nature in a manner that embraces modernity while conserving regional identity.

GAÎTÉ MONTPARNASSE in Paris, France by MVRDV

November 26th, 2022 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: MVRDV

Gaîté Montparnasse, the MVRDV-designed transformation of a city block just a short walk from Paris’ Tour Montparnasse, is now open. The project has rationalised the existing uses of the mixed-use block – which included a hotel, shopping centre, office space and a library – and densified the area by adding social housing and a kindergarten. In doing so, the building has become more welcoming and accessible to pedestrians, while reusing significant parts of the previous structure from the 1970s following circular economy principles.

Completed in 1974, the original design of the “Îlot Vandamme” by Pierre Dufau was a landmark in its time, with the strong vertical lines of what is now the Pullman Hotel tower creating an unmissable presence in Montparnasse. At the same time, the plinth of rough textured concrete, boxy reflective glass, and red steel lattices epitomised the foibles of its era: surrounded by wide boulevards, the block was dominated by cars, and when viewed from the street looked introverted and unwelcoming.

A blooming garden in the concrete jungle where to rest, enjoy with friends and family, and foster your health and mind.

Creating a nourishing and refreshing space was the main task when designing the space. The use of warm materials such as wood and stucco, combined with the lush greeneries everywhere, creates a tropical and almost alive environment.

Creating a cultural destination with mise-en-scène

Nowadays, everyone watches movies online, how could physical cinemas stay relevant and attractive for the cinephiles?

That was the design challenge for our first cinema project for MOViE MOViE at the Taikoo Li Qiantan, a mixed-use development recently completed in Shanghai. We started off asking what is the cinema experience? It is a moment of escape, an internal journey, or an expedition to another world. To complement these adventures, we set out to create a physical platform recalling memories of encountering natural wonders and travelling off the beaten path.

BEASTER Concept Store Suzhou in China by Some Thoughts

November 24th, 2022 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Some Thoughts

Normally, we consider design should present brand new image. Under the accumulation of a long time, a surplus of “products” began to appear in our lives gradually, ranging from construction waste to daily necessities. Nowadays, architects and designers take the restoration projects seriously, which is a response towards the excess of products and an awakening to the future.

Commercial space has often been associated with “differentiation” to achieve brand uniqueness. Hence, how to respond to the “excess” of a variety of materials is a question to designers in the current era. In the design of BEASTER Concept Store, Some Thoughts reflect on the uniqueness achieved by “customization”, aspiring to use the existing products to develop the spatial design of BEASTER, and re-organize the partials of some products we selected to replace the “brand-new” design.

Chapel at Boliqueime in Portugal by Vasco Lopes Arquitectos

November 24th, 2022 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Vasco Lopes Arquitectos

As a social institution with strong ties to the Catholic Church, it makes perfect sense for the “Santa Casa da Misericórdia” to add a new chapel and mortuary to the existing structure.

The new proposal, although a semi-private religious structure, is intended to be open to the general public, which construction commenced in 2008, and was only completed in 2021.
