Article source: Coady Architects The 8,000m2 EOLAS BUILDING at MAYNOOTH UNIVERSITY provides state of the art Information Communication Technology facilities for six different University Departments and Institutes including undergraduate, post-graduate and research users as well as a Business Incubations Centre for start-ups. The building is a major strategic investment by the University as part of an ambitious plan for growth.
Located in the heart of the North Campus, Eolas is a landmark building. It is 4 storeys high with a substantial 2 storey overhang at the south facing main entrance, creating a dramatic welcome on approach. The use of strong colour in the delightful mosaic benches, in combination with the red soffit, creates a vibrant social hub at this sunny focal point of the campus. The overhang merges with the side elevation, folding its way along the east side of the building where it meets the Business Incubation Centre entrance. Eolas is a clever IT building that is user and student friendly, and achieve goals of collaboration, provided through forward looking and flexible spaces which will adapt with the needs of the University in the years to come. Eolas is clad in a bespoke perforated metal filigree cladding. The perforations are based on an abstract Binary pattern and of ‘punch cards’ used in 20th Century data processing, reflecting the research and teachings within. The metal façade contrasts with elements of glazed curtain walling and natural stone cladding, providing a durable low maintenance solution. The pattern in the external cladding has also been carried through into the internal manifestations and the building signage, providing a strong identity and brand for Eolas. A key component of the brief are the informal breakout spaces designed to support collaboration between the six different departments that occupy the building. Regular user group workshops were held to determine the inter-department relationships and requirements to ensure that the brief was met. These spaces are forward looking and flexible. They include meeting pods, group work areas and tea/coffee facilities. The use of colour, feature ceilings and carpets, introduced to define these areas, provide a breakaway from the intense work areas, encouraging relaxation, sharing and networking. With the complex variety of room sizes, the introduction of courtyards brings natural light and ventilation to areas deep in the plan. Each with its own character, these external breakout spaces are integral to the concept of variety and flexibility. Eolas provides increased, purpose-built space for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research; and serves as a place for communal thinking, networking, sharing and mentoring. Eolas has the capacity to accommodate 575 university staff, researchers and MaynoothWorks (Business Incubation Centre) tenants, and can teach 350 students in labs and classrooms at any one time. The core philosophy underpinning Eolas is one of connectedness and collaboration – students will conduct research in high-tech facilities, learn from world-class researchers in their fields, and walk by the latest campus spin-out companies on their way to class. MaynoothWorks has been purposely integrated into the Eolas building, strengthening academia and business links on campus resulting in mutual learnings and benefits through informal and formal collaborations.
