Article source: Architectural studio ZJA in collaboration with HEYLIGERS architects The former Diamond Exchange, Capital C Amsterdam, dating from 1911, has undergone a major renovation designed by the architectural studio ZJA in collaboration with Heyligers architects. The monumental building has been largely restored to the original Gerrit van Arkel design and has regained its original allure. The Dutch monument is crowned with a striking, spatial dome of glass and steel; the High Light. Common thread running through the building are about twenty art and design projects.

Article source: MVRDV MVRDV has completed construction of the Idea Factory, a transformation of a former factory building in the Shenzhen urban village of Nantou that sustainably reusing and improving the building instead of demolishing and rebuilding it. The project contains a mixture of offices for the Urban Research Institute of China Vanke and offices for rent – yet despite this programme, its distinguishing features are public in nature: a stairway cuts its way through the six-storey building, leading to a rooftop with a series of “rooms” enclosed by living bamboo “walls”, offering a variety of amenities and activities.

The surrounding neighborhood called “Barrio Italia” is made up of heritage and renovated properties with an artistic and bohemian spirit standing out. Article source: Tham & Videgård Arkitekter Only a twenty minutes drive from the city center, this house is built on a site that exemplifies the close access of untouched nature not far outside central Stockholm. In this case a large piece of land that reaches from the waterline, where a boathouse sits on the water, up through a steep forested slope to an open plateau at the top of the hill where the main house is located. The access road rises along a steep cliff from the landside which means that the house is approached from below and that the extraordinary position of the house with wide views out over the archipelago landscape can only be fully understood once arrived at the main level.

From urban planning and land use zoning, there is an ambiguity of mixed-use structure that often wanders on the edge of regulations. It has brought many chaotic, rough but self-contained miniature spatial patterns. In Zhutian, we try to explore how to regenerate the structures left by the agricultural relics through several projects. Dexing Rice Factory, built in 1942, is the grain bureau for the rural area of Pingtung in southern Taiwan. Once place for rice storage and for children to play and it has remained the Hakka house (Huo fáng) in everyone’s mind.

Especially the textile industry flourished, a sector of which the city became the epicentre in the 18th century. A remnant of this golden age can be found along the Pierre Corneliskaai. Once a weaving mill, later transformed into a plastic factory under the wings of Tupperware and today a new showroom for designer furniture of bathroom and kitchen specialist Sterck NV.

At the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the founders of SAWA – Robert Winkel and Mark Compeer of Mei architects and planners and Nice Developers – were proud to be presented with the 8th architectural award for SAWA for best Conceptual Architecture in America’s prestigious Architecture MasterPrize competition. In the same week, during a festive ceremony, the symbolic starting signal is given for the construction of this very first circular wooden residential building of 50 meters high in the Netherlands. With this, the project team proves that SAWA is more than a groundbreaking and award-winning concept, but also a viable and practical reality.
