Kunsthaus Zürich in Switzerland by David Chipperfield Architects

December 9th, 2018 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: David Chipperfield Architects

The Kunsthaus Zürich, designed by the Swiss architect Karl Moser, was built between 1904 and 1910 and is situated on Heimplatz, a square in Zurich’s city centre. The existing museum is to be expanded with a new building on the opposite side of the square, designed by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin. The new extension will display a collection of classic modernism, the Bührle Collection, temporary exhibitions and a contemporary art collection starting from the 1960s. Together with the Schauspielhaus (theatre) on the eastern side of the square, the museum buildings will form a ‘gateway to the arts’, an urban entry to the education mile leading to the university buildings to the north.

Vancouver Tea House in Canada by KENGO KUMA AND ASSOCIATES

December 9th, 2018 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: KENGO KUMA AND ASSOCIATES

Last summer, when Tokyo-based Kengo Kuma & Associates received a commission for a 43-story skyscraper in downtown Vancouver, the firm also embarked on a much smaller project for its developer, Ian Gillespie: a tea house. Instead of having the typical garden setting, the 140-square-foot structure sits on a 19th-floor terrace of a residential high-rise owned by Gillespie’s company, Westbank. Gillespie, who has an affinity for Japanese culture, wanted a space where he could entertain while showcasing a cross-cultural collaboration. The design incorporates tradition into a contemporary scheme, says project architect Michael Sypkens: it maintains the conventional tea house veranda, floor plan, and extended eaves—here framing views of the harbor and another Gillespie-owned tower—but features floor-to-ceiling glazing, full insulation, and a painted-aluminum roof. In lieu of customary Japanese cedar for the lattice screens, Kuma opted for local Douglas fir; the moss and stones used for landscaping are also native to the region. “The tea house is a transition from a dense urban environment to this almost spiritual realm,” says Sypkens. “It is a surreal hybridization.”

Gliding Villa in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand by Stu/D/O Architects

In an attempt to create a unique typology of a vacation home, Gliding Villa integrate principles of Thai beliefs, i.e. Feng Shui, with site context and modern design principles. Located at the end of a dead-end road, the site offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains. While owners were hesitant to purchase the plot due to its dead-end location, this superstitiously negative condition is resolved by dividing the site and program into two projects, leaving the area facing the dead-end as an open courtyard; a shared landscape between the living functions distributed along the site boundary. Because Feng Shui determine auspicious settings by referencing local features such as bodies of water and terrain, integrating such beliefs with natural ventilation allowed us to create a sustainable project that provide comfortable living conditions.

Cape Cod House in Wellfleet, Massachusetts by Messana O’Rorke

Located on the leeward side of Cape Cod the Indian Neck spit is the location of this Modernist inspired beach house. Nestled in pine forest and sand dunes looking out to the open water the house is designed to experience seasonal vitality of the location. A simple square of protected habitation, combining indoor and outdoor space under a canopy of lattice Cedar; existing Pitch Pines grow up through the structure providing additional shade. Raised up off the sand, the platform of the house becomes the stage on which a basic set of rooms are arranged, with the principle spaces focused across the broad veranda to Cape Cod Bay. A separate bunk-house with a partially enclosed outdoor shower protects the entrance from the rigors of wind and rain. On the sides of the house angled cedar boards are providing privacy and shade from the rising and setting sun.
